Global dynamics of glaciers

The goal of this project is to develop a model of the flow of an entire glacier, from its origins in the mountain heights (where it is fed by snow and rain) to its termination in the valleys (where it melts to form lakes and rivers). To capture the large-scale dynamics, the model will approximate the small-scale features and the challenge is to use self-consistent physics-based approximation so that the resulting model is rich and physically sound.

The project will involve concepts and techniques like thin-film modelling, power-law fluid rheology, numerical solution of PDEs, nonlinear dynamics and waves, etc.
