Research Topic:Design, fabrication and evaluation of patient specific bio-resorbable occlusion device for atrial septal defect (ASD)

Research Summary:

One of the major ways by which congenital heart defects like Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), etc. are treated is by the use of occlusion devices. During and after the deployment of currently available devices, some patients develop side effects and complications such as device embolization (shifting) and malposition, cardiac perforations and erosions, thromboembolic complications (wherein the blood clot formed around the device become improper or dislodge by itself or become insufficient). In some persons, there are residual and recurring defects, device related infection and wear and cracks both for device and cardiac tissues. Metal framework in many leads to such complications like tissue rupture. Current devices are not patient specific and lack flexibility in terms of available sizes and shapes. The objective of this research is to design patient specific occlusion devices with optimal design after simulation studies. The device thus fabricated will be further validated by experimental studies like stability tests and slenderizing ability and further modified if necessary. Finally, bio compatibility is checked before deployment as a finished product. The process work flow is depicted below.
