Modeling and simulation of dendrite growth in Li-ion battery

The safety of Li-ion batteries is one of the key aspects that affect the market penetration of electric vehicles. Particularly, Lithium insertion during charging can be accompanied by the undesired side reaction of lithium plating. Such plating reactions do not make a smooth lithium layer around a particle but grow as needle/tree-like objects. These dendrites can short-circuit the battery leading to fire or explosions in electric vehicles.
This project will involve the modeling and simulation of such dendrites forming in the battery.
