Title
VoDCa for Sustainable Water & Energy
Abstract: Water & energy encompass all aspects of life and influence wellbeing of every one every day. In these challenging (& interesting) times there are incessant & increasing demands on water & energy resources on one hand and demands & restrictions imposed by global warming & other environmental factors on the other hand. It is therefore essential to develop sustainable solutions for water & energy sectors which balance economic ecological & societal needs. Insights innovations and intensification are essential for achieving this. It is imperative that every effort is made to reduce water usage and to treat wastewater so as to make it reusable or at least safer to discharge into environment. It is also essential to explore possibility of deriving energy from the waste water especially streams containing larger amounts of organic contaminants like distillery spent wash. Anaerobic digestion is one of the best available solutions for deriving energy from waste aqueous streams. However the productivity of anaerobic digesters needs to be improved significantly in order to make their operations economically viable and improve their ability to handle different & difficult waste streams. In this talk I will elaborate on how to harness hydrodynamic cavitation for improving productivity of anaerobic digesters and for distributed treatment of industrial wastewater. Besides these two applications one other application each from energy (removal sulfur from transportation fuels) and water (disinfection of water / ballast water) sectors will be discussed. Recent results on development and applications of ‘Vortex based Devices for Cavitation (VoDCa)’ and some thoughts on path forward will be shared. The approach and results discussed here will hopefully stimulate further developments towards realizing sustainable water and energy sectors.Bio: Vivek Ranade is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Queen’s University Belfast. His research focus is on developing insights innovations & intensified solutions for sustainable energy water and chemicals. He uses computational flow modelling hydrodynamic cavitation and MAGIC (modular agile intensified & continuous) processes to achieve this. Before moving to Queen’s he led chemical engineering at CSIR - National Chemical Laboratory Pune India. He developed several performance enhancement solutions software products and fluidic devices for variety of applications which are commercialized. He developed new insights and methodologies for process intensification.
