Title
Antisolvent crystallization of pharmaceuticals: Controlling particle size and polymorphic behaviour

Abstract:
Antisolvent crystallization is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for crystallization/precipitation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). This talk will present research findings from our work on antisolvent crystallization of several poorly water-soluble APIs such as griseofulvin, curcumin, carbamazepine and fenofibrate. Effect of ultrasound and additives on nucleation kinetics, particle growth, stability of particle suspensions, and polymorphic behaviour of APIs will be discussed. Further, observations related to non-classical crystallization pathways of APIs in presence of ultrasound and additives during antisolvent crystallization will be presented. Use of in-situ Raman spectroscopy and molecular modelling to understand the influence of intermolecular interactions between API and solvent molecules on the polymorphic outcome of crystallization will also be discussed.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Sameer Dalvi is a Professor in Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar. He obtained his MTech and PhD degrees from IIT Bombay followed by postdoctoral training at Columbia University and New Jersey Institute of Technology. His research interests are focused on crystallization and polymorphism of pharmaceutical compounds, and engineering stable aqueous colloidal suspensions containing drug particles and gaseous microbubbles for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. He has published 57 research articles in reputed international journals and has contributed to 35 conference papers, presentations, and posters. He has also received several awards: NASI - Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award for the year 2015 by National Academy of Sciences, India, Excellence in Research Award for the year 2012-13 and Excellence in Teaching Award for the year 2010-11 by Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar and Young Engineers Award for the year 2010 by Institution of Engineers (India).
