About Infrastructure Facility

IIT Bombay has identified bioengineering as a thrust area and plans to strengthen its current research and education efforts in this area. The facility was setup to advance this area and to undertake cross-disciplinary and translational research. DBT has set up a state-of-art infrastructure facility to carry out the highest quality basic and translational research in bioengineering, specifically for diagnostic applications.
Through this collaborative research center with its ecosystem of researchers and its state-of-the-art infrastructure facility, we envision to create, shape and sustain a center to innovate technologies towards affordable diagnostics, which will have economic impact regionally, nationally, and globally. Infrastructure Facility, was established at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in the year 2018, with the support of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi.
The facility houses common research facilities and very sophisticated equipments to work toward the scientific deliverables of the center. The center also provides unique educational opportunities for undergraduate students with hands- on exposure to diagnostics’ development. It operates with an “open access policy”.
The result of this policy is that all can benefit from the services of the Facility. Infrastructure Facility does not operate to compete with any commercial laboratories.

The main objectives of the DBT Infrastructure Facility are:

  • The center develops prototype devices based on its own technology components. The center focuses primarily on technologies that are robust, afford low false positive and false negative rates and have a high potential for translation. Emphasis is given on developing technologies that are affordable, portable and non-invasive or minimally invasive.
  • To organize workshops on the use and application of various highly sophisticated instruments for students, teachers and personnel from other Laboratories, Universities and Industries.
  • To provide facilities of sophisticated instruments to scientists and other users from academic institutes, R&D laboratories and industries.
  • Efforts are made by the Infrastructure Facility to develop device prototypes. The center will generate intellectual property (IP) through patents and technology transfer or licensing to an industry or a start-up venture.
