Biomass is being explored in India as a sustainable alternative for the production of energy and chemicals. The fuel demands are being met through sugar, grains, and agricultural residue, while power and chemicals demands are expected to be met by agricultural residue. The sustainability of biomass as a resource, however, needs to be ascertained. Different regions have different biomass availability in different seasons, and each biomass can be optimally utilized for specific applications. A systematic mapping of resource, region, and application is essential to ensure that biomass utilization is sustainable. This work will focus on develop such a mapping for the country. The work will involve data collection and analysis and some data analysis tools would be needed. Optimization based model may also be developed in the second part of the project. The work is completely computational in nature. The student working on this project will be required to take CL603 in the Spring semester.
