Aqueous zinc-ion battery (AZIB) is an emerging energy storage technology that utilizes safe, water-based electrolytes and zinc metal anodes. The goal of this project is to fabricate an AZIB that uses a zinc metal anode, a suitable cathode, and an aqueous electrolyte within a cell. The work will entail (1) developing a stable, dendrite-free zinc metal anode with high Coulombic efficiency and long cycle life to address issues like hydrogen evolution, corrosion, and passivation; (2) optimizing the cathode and electrolyte composition to enhance compatibility, cycle stability, and energy density; (3) achieving a uniform and scalable electrode fabrication process that ensures strong electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability; (4) maximizing zinc utilization to improve the depth of discharge and overall battery efficiency.
