M.Tech Helpful Tips

Some useful information is provided for current students (last updated July 07, 2026). Please note that some of the rules are subject to change. Please check with our Department Officer or refer to the Academic Home Page for the latest updates and information.

Course Registration

  • Register every semester of the programme.
  • Register for the courses approved under the academic programme curriculum.
  • Mandatory courses and project credits are included in the calculation of the CPI.
  • Minimum Course CPI required for continuation: 4.00.
  • The following Institute and Departmental courses are mandatory:
    (i) Gender in the Workplace
    (ii) Teaching Assistant Skill Enhancement and Training
    (iii) Departmental Lecture Series
     

Master's Project 

  • Master's Project (MTP) is a mandatory component.
  • Each student is allotted a project topic, preferably by the end of the first semester, but no later than the end of the second semester.
  • Each student shall have a Faculty Project Supervisor. In addition, one or more Co-supervisors may be appointed.
     

Late Submission of Project

  • If any project stage is not submitted by the last date specified in the Academic Calendar, the student must:
    (i) Submit a specific request for an extension, with justification.
    (ii) Apply at least 15 days before the original submission deadline.
    (iii) Specify the requested submission date.
    (iv) Pay the Institute fees for the next semester.
    (v) Formally register for the next semester.
     

Teaching Assistance duty for courses

  • Every semester, students are assigned responsibilities to assist in teaching and other academic activities. These responsibilities include assisting with selected courses, administrative tasks, leading laboratory or discussion sessions, grading assignments and examinations, holding office hours to assist students, classroom management, and material preparation.

AI policy and plagarism

 

Conversion to External (EX) Category

  • Students securing employment may apply for conversion to the EX category.
  • The application must be submitted at least two weeks before joining the organisation.
  • Completion of the prescribed coursework and submission of the project proposal are mandatory.
  • An employer's No Objection Certificate (NOC) is mandatory.
  • Hostel accommodation is not available after conversion to the EX category.
  • The degree must be completed within the maximum registration period of four years.

Vacation / Leave

  • Two-Year Master's Programme:
    (i) Winter vacation and a 15-day summer break after the first year.
  • Three-Year Master's Programme:
    (i) Winter vacation and a 15-day summer break after the first and second years.
  • Students are entitled to 30 days of leave (excluding public holidays) during the entire programme.
  • Special Academic Leave (up to 5 working days per semester) may be granted for conferences or seminars.

Discontinuation from the Programme

  • Two or more FR grades in any course at the end of a semester. FR grades in additional learning courses are ignored for this purpose.
  • A student shall be discontinued if the Course CPI falls below 4.00 in any semester. This provision applies after considering re-examinations, wherever permitted.

Thesis defence and finishing up

  • Students are required to submit soft-bound copies to the Project Supervisor for scrutiny, suggestions, modifications, and corrections at least two weeks before the date of the defence.
  • If the dissertation is not submitted by the date specified in the Academic Calendar, the student must pay the full semester fees.
  • If the dissertation has already been submitted on time but the viva cannot be held, a grace period of up to 10 days after the dissertation submission deadline may be granted, provided a specific request is made well in advance.
  • If the Supervisor is unavailable for an extended period, the Head of the Academic Unit may appoint an Acting Supervisor solely for conducting the final viva.
  • After incorporating the Supervisor's suggestions, the student must submit the dissertation to the Committee of Examiners at least one week before the defence.
  • The viva-voce shall be conducted under departmental arrangements. Before the viva process is completed, the student must submit:
    (i) Dissertation Submission Forms (duly completed).
    (ii) Provisional Clearance from the Accounts Section.
    (iii) Provisional Clearance from the HCU (Hostel Coordination Unit).
  • The dissertation/report must be submitted in electronic form to the Central Library within one month of the defence. If the dissertation is submitted after the due date, a fine of Rs. 5,000/- per month from the due date until the date of submission will be levied on the concerned student.
