Syllabus and Objectives

Contents: Interphase mass transfer and mass transfer coefficients; Equilibrium stages and transfer units; number and height of transfer units; stage efficiency; principles of design of equipments for phase contacting; plate and packed columns; calculations for binary and multi-component mixtures; batch and continuous distillation; calculations with multiple feeds and withdrawals; azeotropic, extractive and steam distillation; tray hydrodynamics and efficiencies; liquid-liquid extraction; calculations with and without reflux for immiscible and partially miscible system; design of packed tower for gas absorption; effect of reaction on tower design.

Goals: At the end of this course, the student should be able to

1. Analyze mass transport with diffusion coefficients and with mass transfer coefficients in systems with and without chemical reactions.

2. Design packed tower for absorption/stripping of dilute and concentrated binary and multicomponent mixtures with and without chemical reactions.

3. Design simple and advanced columns for continuous distillation of binary and multicomponent mixtures; calculate efficiencies of stages in the columns.

4. Using triangular diagrams estimate number of stages in liquid-liquid extraction process.
