CL 351 Homework # 11
Due date: 4 November 2004
1. An 11.5
wt% mixture of acetic acid in water is to be extracted with 1-butanol at 1 atm
and 26.7oC. We desire outlet
concentration of 0.5 wt% in the water and 9.6 wt% in the butanol. Inlet butanol is pure. Find the number of equilibrium stages and
the ratio of water to butanol. The equilibrium is represented as y = 1.613 x
where y is mole fraction of acid in butanol phase and x is mole fraction of
acid in aqueous phase.
2. The feed
mixture in Problem 1 is separated in a cross flow extraction system at 26.7oC
and 1 atm. The same amount of solvent
in Problem 1 is divided equally among four stages. Find the outlet concentrations of all streams.
3. Do the
problem discussed in tutorial.
4. You have
a three-stage extractor with which you are isolating a therapeutic protein with
physical properties similar to myoglobin from 9400 liters of a clarified
beer. The extraction solvent is an
organic solution of inverted micelles of Aerosol OT in dodecanol, which at pH
of 6.2 has a partition coefficient given by y = 180x. How much solvent will you need to recover ninety-five percent of
the protein?
