Design of nanoporous materials for gas separation (TA or FA only)

Natural gas meets around 20-25% of world energy demands. Overall the world has around 200 trillion cubic meters of natural gas reserve and new reservoirs are being found. Methane gas constitutes around 80-90% of natural gas and for economical utilization of methane as fuel, efficient separation technology is required. The aim of this project is to design new nanoporous materials for methane separation and storage from natural gas.

Materials for water purification and desalination (TA or FA only)

Although earth is covered with 70% of water, only 2% of it is available as fresh drinkable water. Access to this fresh water is scarce in many parts of the country. The groundwater contamination due to industrial pollution and geological minerals leads to many health issues, especially in childrens and women. Conversion of sea-water to fresh water is an expensive and energy-intensive process. The aim of this project is to find organic and inorganic porous materials for water purification.

Studies in Biomass and waste gasification

Gasification of agrowaste and some components of municipal solid
waste to energy for thermal and electrical applications has attracted attention
in the recent past. The work is in progress on high ash garden waste, its
kinetics and performance in small downdraft gasifier. The present work involves
further experimental and modeling studies in downdraft gasification of this
feedstcok. The focus is on understanding the cause behind tar and particulate
emissions and their dependence on various parameters.

Structure and Dynamics of Interfacial Water

Water is one of the most abundant, ubiquitous and essential material to sustain all biological life on earth. Most of the water exists in large bodies (bulk quantities) in the ocean, river and lakes. However, in many industrial and scientifically relevant conditions, water is associated with other surfaces. Understanding its structure and dynamics at molecular length-scale is useful in catalysis,corrosion, adsorption and atmospheric sciences.

Chemical transport modelling and climate impacts from carbonaceous aerosols over India using WRF-CMAQ

Climate
change is influenced by short lived climate pollutants, including pollution
particles or aerosols, such as black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and
“brown carbon” (BrC), in addition to greenhouse gases. We have developed emissions
inventories for India, which establish traditional biomass technologies, used

Design and synthesis studies of porous materials

Please contact me if you are interested in this area. The project is
compulational base and would involve lots of programming and running
simulation softwares. The skills required are; a) good basics in
transport phenomena, b) basic (primariy level of) understanding in
interfacial science and c) good programming skills.
