R&D Areas/Projects

  • Elecrohydroydrodynamics in fluid systems

Electrohydrodynamics is an interplay between fluid mechanics and electrostatics. The Maxwell stress can be harnessed to suppress instabilities caused by interfacial tension (Rayleigh Plateau instability), thereby leading to applications such as electrospinning, or it can be used to overcome interfacial tension, leading to applications such as pattern formation in soft lithography, electroemulsification and electrocoalescence. Our emphasis is both, to understand the fundamentals of electrohydrodynamics as well as to seek new applications.

  • Electrohydrodynamics of Bio-membranes:

Biomembranes are extremely labile interfaces characterized by bending rigidity and an area conserving tension. Our emphasis in this area is to understand morphological and shape changes in planar, cylindrical, spherical (liposomes) bilayers using experiments, analytical theory and numerical simulations. The focus is on applications such as electroporation and electrofusion and in understanding fundamentals of charged bilayers.
