Using Z39.50 Search in Koha

  • It is very convenient to search for a MARC record if the book is kept handy nearby (in order to choose among several possible MARC records that show up)
  • Login to http://library.che.iitb.ac.in:8080/ administrative interface
  • Go to Cataloguing > Add MARC record
  • Click on the z39.50 Search, a new window will open up
  • Provide one or two keywords in the Title and Author
  • Select 'Library of Congress' from "Search Target". This is the most extensive resource for MARC records. Only if this fails to return, use the other targets
  • Click on the Search button.  Usually several results will be found.  Now open the physical book in your hand and look for the ISBN number, Edition, Publication year etc from the book's front matter (copyright page), and match the closest MARC record from the list.  More details about the search can be found by clicking on the "Card" link against each result.  Still further details can be found in the MARC  link.
    • The author names should be in the fields starting at "100 1"and "700 1",
    • Publisher information will be against the fields starting "260  " and the edition against "250  ".
    • ISBN number is against the field "020"
  • Select the best possible match, and click on the "Import" link which will grab the data to the original window.
  • Back in the original window, select the type of resource (under framework). Choose "Book" for books.
  • Click on "Save". This will save a copy of the MARC record in Koha.
