Viscoelastic Liquid Drops and Jets
The dynamics of deformation of a liquid drop as it forms in a cylindrical faucet or when it impacts a solid surface, has significant consequences in several applications such as: atomisation and sprays, ink jet printing, electrospinning, deposition of aerosols in lungs, delivery and deposition of agrochemicals, plasma spraying etc. The nature of the deformation is predominantly elongational and the presence of small amounts of polymer additives alters the elongational viscosity to a large extent that the shape and dynamics of such a drop is vastly different from a pure (Newtonian) drop. This study aims to understand, model, and simulate drop and jet dynamics through a combination of molecular simulations and continuum methods. The results will be validated by experiments involving high speed imaging and analysis of drop and jet dynamics.
