Description-
Absorption, desorption and stripping are the techniques of the separation mainly used in the process of purification of solvents. Absorption is carried out by transferring the gaseous solution towards the absorbing liquid having weak volatility. The transfer takes place based on the preferential dissolution of solute in the liquid phase. Desorption is the reverse process in which the volatile gas dissolved in the liquid phase is transferred to gaseous phase. The setup is used to study the hydrodynamics of the column which allows determining the packing factors of the column. The setup is also used to study the absorption/desorption system of NH3 by water and CO2 by sodium hydroxide solution. This helps in determining the material balance, number of theoretical plates vs. hydrodynamic conditions and efficiency of the column. It is also used to estimate mass transfer coefficient for absorption of ammonia into water.
