ANNUAL REPORT 2003-2004


The Department of Chemical Engineering has a strong focus on excellence in education and research. The Department has a dynamic faculty with a wide range of research specializations. Research activities in the Department are supported by excellent research students (75 Ph.D., 80 M.Tech. and 20 Dual Degree) very competent technical staff, and good experimental and computational facilities.


Two faculty members have joined the faculty in the year 2003-2004 - Professor Mahesh Tirumkudulu and Professor Madhu Vinjamur. Professors K. P. Madhavan, S.L. Narayanamurthy, and S.R. Patwardhan retired in this period, each after a long and valued service to the Department. The recruitment of students into the PhD programme has been very good this year and has contributed to the increase in research activity in the Department. The Department also received good funding for sponsored projects this year.


The Department-Industry interactions were multifold this year including continuing education courses, consultancy and technology transfer. The Department also received generous support from its alumnus, Mr. Avi Nash. The Manudhane Excellence Awards have been instituted and the renovation of 6 classrooms and undergraduate laboratories has been initiated from his donation.

ChEA symposium 2004


The Chemical Engineering Association of IIT Bombay (ChEA) organized a symposium "Biotechnology - A New Dimension to Chemical Engineering" on March 13, 2004. The focus of the symposium was on providing glimpses of cutting-edge research and on providing perspectives on intellectual property protection and the regulatory process for approval of biotherapeutics. Eminent experts from industry and academia delivered lectures at the symposium. Invited technical lectures were given by Mr. Satish Velankar, Lupin Ltd., Mumbai, Mr. Dhananjay Patankar, Indus Biotherapeutics Ltd., Ahmedabad, Dr. Prabuddha Ganguly, Advisor, VISION-IPR, Dr. Harikrishna Varma, SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Surekha Zingde, ACTREC, Navi Mumbai, and Dr. Jayant Udgaonkar, NCBS, Bangalore. The symposium attracted wide participation by students and industry professionals. The convener of the symposium was Prof. S. Noronha and the co-convener was Prof. K. V. Venkatesh.
