“Optimize
the resources, but don’t victimize the future.”
With “Greenness” issues like
“sustainability” comes hand in hand. Encapsulating entire life of a plant
within system boundary taking into account the stakes from inventory analyzing
the impact of that industry is what we call sustainability study; in other word
“Life cycle analysis” or an LCA.
The damage estimation by LCA takes into
consideration all the inputs in making a product and the individual damages
done in producing those inputs which again, in turn, are dependent on their own
inputs. This interdependence of products and processes makes LCA a powerful
tool to recognize the impacts of a product, but also makes the whole job of
analysis a formidable task. Thus an LCA can tell us how ‘green’ a so-called
‘green’ technology really is.
By this competition, we aim to encourage
the use of LCA as a tool for corporate decisions as well as governmental
policy-making in India. At a time when every corporate has started proclaiming
the “Greenness” of their operations; the term green is becoming a healthy
substitute of registered trademark®, we ask, are they really green and
sustainable??
It’s time to make the reality uncover with
appropriate use of engineering assumptions (spherical cow or cylindrical one),
economics, impact assessment and finally interpretation of data. So, are you
ready for the challenge? Life Cycle Assessment.
